What Long Run Times Actually Mean

A heat pump does not blast heat the way a furnace does. It moves heat from outdoor air into your house in a slow, steady stream, so on a cold morning it may run for hours at a stretch and that is working as designed. What is not normal is a heat pump that runs constantly and never reaches the thermostat setting, or one that runs nonstop while the air from the vents feels cool. The other warning sign is auxiliary or emergency heat staying on all day, because that strip heat costs far more to run than the heat pump itself. If the house holds temperature and the air feels warm, you are probably fine.

Cause One: Airflow and Settings, The Cheap Stuff

Start with the least expensive causes, because they are also the most common. A loaded filter chokes the system and makes it run longer for less heat. Closed or blocked supply vents do the same thing, and so does furniture pushed against a return grille. Thermostats cause plenty of these calls too. A schedule someone set months ago, a fan setting left on, or a system switch bumped to emergency heat will all produce constant running. Weak thermostat batteries can hold a call for heat open. None of this needs tools beyond a new filter, and it is worth ten minutes before you call anybody across the region.

Cause Two: The Outdoor Unit and Defrost

Heat pumps frost up outdoors in cold weather and are built to melt that frost off on a cycle. If the coil stays buried in ice, the defrost control, sensor or reversing valve may not be doing its job, and the system will run and run without delivering much heat. Snow drifted against the unit, leaves packed into the coil, or a roof drip line refreezing over the top all block the airflow it needs. You can clear loose debris and shovel snow back from the sides by hand. Do not chip at ice or pour hot water on the coil, and do not pull the top panel.

Cause Three: Refrigerant Charge, Compressor and Sizing

When airflow and defrost check out, the next layer is refrigerant charge and the compressor itself. A system low on refrigerant has lost it through a leak, and adding more without finding the leak just delays the same call. A worn compressor or a stuck reversing valve will move heat poorly and run endlessly trying. Sizing and insulation matter as well. An older heat pump on a house that has been added onto, or one paired with propane or wood backup that is no longer keeping up, may simply be undersized for the coldest stretch. All of this is diagnosis for a technician, not a homeowner.
